My Room in the Trees is the eighth studio album from The Innocence Mission, released July 13 via Badman Recording Company.

The iTunes edition of the album contained an exclusive bonus track, "Greys and Blues." The song was a pre-order bonus track, meaning that it was only available to those who pre-ordered the entire album before July 13.

Background and production

Originally slated for release in spring 2009, the album was preceded by the teaser EP release Street Map in December 2008. The EP – released independently by The Innocence Mission via their own LAMP label – was intended to preview several tracks that would later appear on their then-upcoming studio album. However, an update to their website in September 2009 revealed that after further recording, the next LP had "turned out to be a mostly new group of songs, with maybe one song from Street Map." Later, in March 2010, it was announced that no songs found on Street Map will appear on My Room In The Trees.[1]

The track "I'd Follow If I Could" was originally released as a bonus track on international editions of their previous studio album We Walked in Song under the title "Shooting Star (Sketch)," while "Rhode Island" is a new version of a song that dates back to early 1996. "Rhode Island" was performed a handful of times on the band's Glow tour, and for a February 1996 appearance on the Acoustic Cafe radio show. A 1997 demo recording of "Rhode Island" was briefly offered through the band's official site as a free download in February 2003.[2] The new recording of "Rhode Island" has distinctive double-tracked harmonies.

"Rain (Setting Out in the Leaf Boat)" features the return of founding member Steve Brown on drums, who left the group in 1997 to pursue a career as a chef. Two tracks ("Mile-Marker" and "The Melendys Go Abroad") are instrumentals—a staple of songwriter/guitarist Don Peris' solo work, but a relatively new hallmark of Innocence Mission releases (there were three such instrumentals on the Street Map EP).

The full version of new song "The Happy Mondays" is available to stream on the radio player located at Badman Recording Co.'s website, while the site will also be "taking pre-orders for the CD around May 25th and shipping in mid-June to those that can't wait to have this beautiful, uplifting thirteen song album."[3]
