N.Peal

N.Peal store, Burlington Arcade, London

N.Peal is a luxury cashmere knitwear and accessories specialist, founded in London by Nat Peal in 1936. It is currently owned by Adam Holdsworth and its Head Office is in Beamsley, North Yorkshire.

History

1936-1945

The first N.Peal shop was opened as a men’s haberdashery in London’s Burlington Arcade in Mayfair by Nat Peal in March 1936. Peal’s real name was Leapman; the first part of his name was transposed in order to sound more traditionally ‘British’.

When World War II broke out in 1939, Peal was stationed on the Shetland Islands.[1] During this time he supplied his store with sweaters knitted from the wool of Shetland sheep. As wool was being rationed during wartime Peal was able to harness the demand for high quality knitwear in Britain.

1945-1950s

When peacetime was restored, Peal returned to London and reinstated cashmere wool as the principal material in his knitwear. Peal began to make annual trips to New York and Boston to grow his business in the United States of America.

2010

The N.Peal brand was purchased by Adam Holdsworth in 2007. At the time Managing Director Holdsworth had more than 25 years of experience in cashmere manufacture. In that same year the brand appointed fashion designer Sara Berman and her sister Amiee Berman as Creative Directors of N.Peal.[2]

2012 - Appearance in Skyfall

In 2012 N.Peal supplied 25 custom-made identical cashmere sweaters to be worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall.[3] The large quantity of sweaters was required so that the garments would appear pristine in each take.

2013–Present

In 2013 the N.Peal flagship store in Burlington Arcade received a full refurbishment, reminiscent of its original Deco styling.[4]

Stores

N.Peal has four stores in London: the flagship store in Burlington Arcade, Mayfair; a Knightsbridge store at 4a Sloane Street; and a second Sloane Street Store at 149 Sloane Street. In December 2014 N.Peal opened a fourth London store in Piccadilly. The N.Peal Head Office is in Beamsley, North Yorkshire.
