National Cycle Route 74
National Cycle Route 74 is an incomplete route between Carlisle to Uddingston. The Sustrans site plans for it to be completed by March 2016.
Route
Carlisle to Douglas
This section of route is complete and mainly follows the old A74 road, some sections of which have been downgraded from dual carriageway to single carriageway with parallel cycle track. It runs from Carlisle, Cumbria to Douglas via Abington.
Douglas to Larkhall
This section of the route is still under development (the missing link). It will run from Douglas, South Lanarkshire to Larkhall via Lesmahagow.
The Sustrans site plans for it to be completed by March 2016.
Larkhall to Uddingston
This section of the route has now been opened. It runs from Larkhall to Hamilton before joining NCR 75 in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire just south of Glasgow. The route is being developed by South Lanarkshire Council, however no information is currently available on their website. The Avon Walkway, between Chatelherault Country Park and Strathclyde Country Park, was upgraded to form part of this route. Between Uddingston and Bothwell the route runs along various paths formed on the alignment of an old railway line. The route then crosses the David Livingstone Memorial Footbridge to Blantyre. Between Bothwell Bridge and Strathclyde Country Park the route runs on the upgraded footway of Bothwell Road in Hamilton. It will run between Chatelherault Country Park and Larkhall by widening and upgrading the footway of Carlisle Road (A72 and B7078) to cycleway status. The latter was proposed as a cheaper option preferred in place of developing a route through the Avon Gorge within Chatelherault Country Park itself.
