The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) World Tag Team Championship is the professional wrestling world tag team championship within the NWA framework.

History

The National Wrestling Alliance did not recognize a single World Tag Team Championship until 1982, while various NWA territories promoted their own "World Tag Team Championships". The following are the variations that existed at one point or another:[1]

In the mid-1980s, Jim Crockett Promotions became the flag bearer for the NWA and began to openly refer to their Mid Atlantic version as the NWA World Tag Team Championship. In 1988, Jim Crockett Promotions was transformed into World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and the title was renamed the WCW World Tag Team Championship.

In July 1992 a tournament was held by WCW, whose World Tag Team Championship by that time was the only existing claim within the NWA and which had the most widely available television broadcasting. The tournament was won by Terry Gordy & Steve Williams. Gordy & Williams also won the WCW World Tag Team Championship in a non-tournament match on July 5, prior to the NWA tournament final and the two sets of titles remained unified until September 1993, when WCW withdrew from the NWA, vacating the NWA World Tag Team Championship. The titles would remain vacant until a tournament was held in 1995, which was won by The Rock 'n' Roll Express.

The NWA title belts were paid for by WCW and after the withdrawal from the NWA, the belts were continued to be used for the WCW World Tag Team Championship. The NWA had to pay for new belts, which were later used in TNA until TNA and the NWA split on May 13, 2007. On January 17, 2008 the NWA withdrew its recognition of every tag team champion in WCW, but as of October 13, 2014 the NWA official website lists all title holders from WCW as former champions. In Summer of 2013, the NWA revealed brand new designs for its World Tag Team and North American Heavyweight Championships.[2][3]

Reigns

As of December 2016, there have been seventy-five total title reigns recognized by the NWA. Rasche Brown and Keith Walker, known as the Skullkrushers, hold the record for longest reign, which lasted 777 days before they lost the belts to Jon Davis and Kory Chavis of The Dark City Fight Club. The Skullkrushers, by virtue of such a lengthy run as champions, also hold the record for most cumulative days as champions.

America's Most Wanted, which consisted of James Storm and Chris Harris, are the record holders for most reigns as a team with six. Harris and Storm are tied for most individual reigns as champion, with both having seven total. Harris held the title with Elix Skipper while Storm held it with Christopher Daniels.

The current reigning champions are The Iron Empire (Matt Riviera and Rob Conway), who are in their second reign as champions. Riviera and Conway won the titles on September 10, 2016 in Dyersburg, Tennessee at NWA Mid-South event defeating The Heatseekers.
