Nagraj Manjule is an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter known for film Sairat and his first short film Pistulya[1] for which he received National Film Award in Non-Feature Film category.
Manjule published a book of poetry in Marathi titled Unhachya Katavirudhha (उन्हाच्या कटाविरुध्) which won the Bhairuratan Damani Sahitya Puraskar.[2]
At the 61st National Film Awards, Fandry won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director.[3]
Early life and background
Manjule grew up in Jeur village in the Solapur district of Maharashtra.[4][5]
Nagraj Manjule was married in 1997, when he was barely 18–19 years old at a time he was studying in XII. After 15 years of married life divorce case was filed in 2012, and fixed up a deal in 2014 and they got divorced.[6]
He has pursued his M.A. in Marathi literature from University of Pune, followed by Masters in communication studies from New Arts, Science and Commerce College, Ahmednagar.[1][7]
Career
Nagraj's films are deeply rooted in his own experience growing up as a dalit in rural Maharashtra.[8][9] His films have focused on the plights faced by members of these communities, including social discrimination at the hands of savarna communities as well as the resulting economic hardships. His first National Award winning short film Pistulya is a reflection of his 'felt experience',.[10] Pistulya focuses on the desire of a dalit boy to attend school, and his inability to do so because of his family's poverty and a deep seated disdain for formal education within his community. His debut feature film, Fandry, was released in February 2014. Fandry (the word means pig in the Kaikadi language.[1][7]) focuses on the hardships faced by a Kaikadi family leaving in poverty on the outskirts of a village whose social and economic structure is dominated by members of savarna communities. Fandry garnered critical acclaim.[11] His second film, Sairat premiered at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. Sairat, like Fandry and Pistulya, deals with caste discrimination and honor killing, a practice still widespread in parts of India. Sairat also seeks to address the role of women in society; with the character of Archie (Archana Patil), the female protagonist of Sairat, garnering both popular and critical acclaim. Sairat is currently the highest grossing Marathi film of all times.
