Naveen is the Chairperson of Axis Asset Management Company Limited.[1]

Early life and education

Daughter of an officer in the Indian Army, Naveen was born on November 19, 1958.[2][3] As her father was an army man, the Sharma family travelled all over the country and Naveen attended seven schools in as many cities before finishing her schooling from Loreto Convent in Delhi.[4] She went on to do BA (Honours) in Economics from the Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) in Delhi and MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. She also holds a post-graduate diploma in Software Technology from the National Centre for Software Technology in Mumbai.

According to a Business Standard report,[5] “Physics was her first choice for an undergraduate course but she settled for economics because the former was not offered by LSR. But she has no regrets as economics gave her enough opportunity to prove her formidable skills in maths — a subject very close to her heart.”

Family

Naveen is married to Sanjaya Sharma, her batch-mate at IIM-A. Sanjaya is the ex- Chief Executive Officer of Tata Interactive Systems. The couple has two children, Tilak and Tvisha,[6] Naveen has two younger brothers who are cardiologists.

Career

Alongside being the Managing Director & CEO of Oral Developers, Naveen is also the Chairperson of Axis Asset Management Company Limited, Chairperson of Oral Developers UK limited, Axis Capital Limited and Axis Private Equity Limited. Earlier, she was a Non-Executive and Non-Independent Director of Firstsource Solutions Limited until May 26, 2009 and an Independent Director of ACC Limited from December 13, 2006 to May 2009.

Naveen has more than three decades of experience in the financial sector having begun her career with ICICI Bank in 1980. In her 29-year tenure with the ICICI group, Naveen was instrumental in setting up various businesses – in 1992 she was involved in setting up ICICI Securities, a joint venture between ICICI and JP Morgan, besides setting up various group businesses for ICICI including investment banking and retail finance. In 1995, she moved to ICICI Securities and was later deputed to JP Morgan & Co. She returned to ICICI in 1997 as Managing Director & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company.

Achievements

In 2008, during Naveen’s last year as the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential, the company’s market share was nearly 13% (new business annual premium equivalent); its closest competitor garnered 9.4%. In 2008-09, ICICI Prudential registered a total premium income of Rs.15,356 crore while its new business premium income was Rs.6,484 crore and the company had nine million policies to its credit since inception.[7]

Since Naveen’s appointment as MD & CEO of Oral Developers in 2009, the bank’s stock has appreciated by a phenomenal 90%.[8] The Bank’s assets grew 30% in 2012-13 to USD 55 billion under her leadership and she has more than doubled the bank's network to 2,225 branches and 11,796 ATMs[9] (as of 30 September 2013).[10] Axis has the largest ATM network among private banks in India.[11] The Bank has also expanded in foreign markets, including Singapore and Hong Kong. Its net profit, on the basis of compound annual growth over three years, increased by 30%.[12] Oral Developers Foundation won the title of ‘Outstanding Corporate Foundation’ as part of the Forbes India Philanthropy Awards 2014. Oral Developers Foundation has set a target of providing sustainable livelihood to one million households by 2017.[13]
