The Newman School

The Newman School

The Newman School is a private school in the Back Bay district of Boston, Massachusetts.

History

The Newman School was founded as Newman Preparatory School in 1945, the centennial of John Henry Cardinal Newman's conversion to Roman Catholicism, by Dr. J. Harry Lynch and a group of Catholic laymen, for the purpose of providing college preparation to veterans returning from service to their country in World War II. Over the years, Newman Prep evolved into a co-educational, diploma-granting program, and eventually began to accept younger students into the ninth grade. During the 1960s, the school operated The Newman School for Boys as a separate four-year (grades nine through twelve) and then six-year (grades seven through twelve) college preparatory school. Walter J. Egan was head of the School for Boys during most of its existence.

Now known as The Newman School and headed by J. Harry Lynch Jr., son of the founder, Newman provides a liberal education to a diverse group of approximately 200 American and international students. The student body is composed of students from the Greater Boston area; 50 percent of whom come from the city of Boston itself. International students come from such countries as Brazil, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Thailand, Austria, Iran, Czech Republic, China, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan, among other countries.

Academics

The Newman School offers a rigorous traditional liberal arts curriculum in preparation for the academic demands of college. Steeped in an academic philosophy based on critical thinking, students are encouraged to reach beyond simple answers to the root of the subject, developing the reasoning skills that fuel academic success.

In addition to a traditional curriculum, The Newman School offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma program that students may take advantage of in their Junior and Senior years. Students in both programs benefit from a range of diverse elective options as they take advantage of all that the school offers, including athletics, community service opportunities, clubs and activities.

Newman’s English as a Second Language Program is designed to prepare students for success in college and university.

Students Newman’s ESL classes are integrated with math, science and electives for all students.

Girls Crew

The girls crew is shaping up this year to race in the Head of The Charles Regata. Famed Coach Tom Tiffany has just moved the girls team up into a competitive league. Co-captains Emily McHale and Briana Howard lead the Varsity team and have rowed in a double in the Head of the Charles Regatta. Co-ed and culturally diverse, the team runs along the Charles River and has recently joined a new league to compete against private schools. In the past Newman has had 3 girls finish in the top four in the leagues finals. They finished in first, second, and fourth. The team runs 5K races through different terrain. Coached by Mrs. Tangren, the team has never been looking better.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team's short history is a largely successful one. Along with the boys' team they are competitive and hard to beat. Their first year playing in 2006 they were undefeated their entire season. And now in 2009 they were still undefeated during their season, having lost their first game in the championship to Commonwealth.

Co-ed Tennis

The Newman Tennis Team has been statistically one of the most winning teams in Newman. Going nearly undefeated in the 2009 season, the team is coached by Thomas Ramsey and Drew Reilly, and practices at the Boston Athletic Club.
