Norwegian Joy, previously named Norwegian Bliss,[3] is a cruise ship under construction for Norwegian Cruise Line, due to enter service in March 2017. She is being built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.[4]

Being a component of Norwegian's Breakaway Plus class, Norwegian Joy is a sister ship to the Norwegian Escape, which was completed in October 2015.[5] The ship's original Norwegian Bliss name was selected through an online contest hosted by Norwegian Cruise line.[4] The construction of Norwegian Bliss started on 16 September 2015.[6]

It was announced on 12 October 2015, that the ship would be reintroduced and redesigned specifically for the Chinese market.[3] On 30 March 2016, the ships new name, Norwegian Joy, and the new home ports of Shanghai & Tianjin (Beijing) were announced.[7] It has been reported that she will visit Dubai on her re-positioning cruise to China. Other ports of call on her maiden cruise have yet to be confirmed.[8] The keel was laid on 5 April 2016. A first section was launched on 4 June 2016.[9] A second section was launched on 19 August 2016.

On 28 September 2016 a fire broke out on the ship. On 8 October 2016 it burned again.[10][11]

Ship engineering

Norwegian Joy has five main engines with total output power of 102,900 hp. The vessel has two MAN B&W 14V48/60CR, each with power of 22,520 hp and three MAN B&W 12V48/60CR, each with power of 19,300 hp. The propulsion system is two ABB Azipod XO units with total power of 40 MW, which allows service speed of 22.5 kts, while the maximum speed during trials exceeds 25.0 kts. The hull has an air lubrication system, using tiny air bubbles to reduce drag.[12]
