Overlapping generations in population genetics refers to mating systems where more than one breeding generation is present at any one time. Humans are an example of overlapping generations. Many annual plants have discrete generations, and are not overlapping. This is one of the characteristics that need to be met in Hardy-Weinburg model for evolution to occur.
