Paranatural is a webcomic written and illustrated by Zack Morrison. The comic follows the story of Max, the new kid at school, and the other members of the Activity Club as they fight ghosts, investigate the secrets of Mayview, and interact with their fellow middle school students.

The comic releases updates on Tuesdays and Fridays and has been doing so since early 2010.[1]

Main Characters

Max “Enjoys smirking, scowling, and scootboarding.” [2]
Isaac "Possesses startling hair."

Maxwell “Max” Puckett, the protagonist, is an up-and-coming spectral and a member of the Activity Club. Often seen wearing a graphic tee, Max comes off as sarcastic and cynical but does not resist annoying someone for the sake of it or making puns, qualities best seen when he’s with Isaac or Johnny.[2]

Isabel Guerra, a spectral, a student at Mayview Middle School, and a member of the Activity Club, Isabel is stubborn and determined to a fault, using skills taught to her by her grandfather to win fights against spirits to protect her friends and her school.

Isaac O’Connor is a short-tempered member of the Activity Club and student at Mayview Middle School. Despite his member status in the club and ability as a medium, Isaac is banned from discussion of the Consortium, leading him to resent the other members and Mr. Spender.

Edward “Ed” Burger is the fourth and final member of the Activity Club, known for being bizarre and affable, as well as fearless. He enjoys fighting spirits, despite the danger, and especially enjoys fighting alongside his friends.

Richard “Rick” Spender, or Mr. Spender, is the faculty leader of the Activity Club as well as a spectral. He has numerous connections inside the Consortium and uses his abilities to teach the children about their abilities as well as protect Mayview.[2]

Content

The comic follows the adventures of Max and the Activity Club throughout their adventures. They fight ghosts and bullies, play hitball, and solve the mysteries of the town. Isaac struggles with a seemingly pointless ban on being told information, struggling with the other members of the team because of it. Meanwhile, Max is hunted for information by Suzy, the nosy newspaper reporter desperate to learn about the Activity Club, and hunted down by Johnny Jhonny, the school bully.[3]

The story is told through an omnipotent third person, sometimes including guest art or mini-comics. The comic is drawn page by page in a standard panel format, including shifted panels and extraneous movements depending on the activity going on. Morrison also includes alt text on each page, with a short comment on the page.

Morrison interacts with his readers through the text underneath the pages as well as both his Twitter[4] and Tumblr[5] accounts.
