Known for | Material flow analysis |
Paul H. Brunner is the father of the material flow analysis methodology and an expert in urban metabolism. He is a professor emeritus of the Institute for Water Quality, Resource and Waste Management, Vienna University of Technology in Austria.
Biography
Educated in Switzerland (doctoral degree in natural sciences, ETH Zurich) and the USA (post doctoral fellow in Environmental Engineering, Stanford University), Dr. Brunner held the Chair for Waste Management at the Vienna University of Technology from 1991 to 2015, and specialized in waste and resource management. His research focused on the "metabolism of the anthroposphere", in particular on methods to analyze, evaluate and control material flows through urban regions. The results are applied for decision making in the fields of resource management, waste management, and environmental protection. They serve e.g. as a base for designing sustainable products, processes and systems, for nutrient management, and for urban planning. Other activities of Paul Brunner included: development of goal oriented waste management concepts; assessment methods for waste management systems; research into methods for waste analysis and waste treatment; the search for ultimate sinks such as final storage landfills.
On April 21, 2016 Prof. Paul H. Brunner was awarded the "Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria" by Minister Dr. Reinhold Mitterlehner.[1]
Paul H. Brunner authored more than 500 publications, with over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Science, Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Waste Management & Research, Water Research, Müll und Abfall and others.
