José Martín Cuevas Cobos (born September 28, 1969), known professionally as Pedro Fernández, is a Mexican singer, actor, TV host, and songwriter. Fernández began his international career as Pedrito Fernández at the age of seven.
Today Pedro has recorded 39 albums, starred in 7 soap operas, 25 films and continues captivating audiences all over the world. He has achieved 3 Diamond records, 37 Gold records, 26 Platinum records and 4 Latin Grammy awards. He is married, has three daughters and one grandson.
He is widely recognized around the world for his variety of music, expressive voice, passionate interpretation and his charismatic personality. He is also professionally known as "El Aventurero de América" and "El Aventurero de México".[1]
Recording artist, composer, producer, television presenter and actor Pedro Fernández is a winner of endless national and international awards such as, TVyNovelas Award for Best Actor (2010) for "Hasta Que el Dinero Nos Separe", Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album (2001) for "Yo No Fui", Latin Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Song (2010) for "Amarte a la Antigua", Latin Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Song (2013) (writer and performer) for "Cachito de Cielo", and the Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album (2015) for "Acaríciame El Corazón".[2][3][4][5]
Fernández was a restless, almost hyperactive child who directed part of his energy, from as early as age three, to interpreting some of the ranchera and mariachi songs he heard on the radio. Fernández adopted a stage name that reflected his love affair with ranchera music and two of its icons: Pedro Infante and Vicente Fernández.
He has had a long successful singing and acting career beginning at age 7 with his first recording which would skyrocket with the song "La de la Mochila Azul" (The blue backpack). His first album, La de la Mochila Azul, named for the single, was released in 1978 which led to his starring role in the film "La niña de la mochila azul" (The Girl with the Blue Backpack) released in 1979. His instant success won him additional recording and film contracts and consolidated his image as a child prodigy.[6]
Pedro Fernández has performed for international important characters such as, Queen Sofía of Spain in her visit to Mexico in 2000, former U.S. President George W. Bush at the White House in 2002 honoring the Mexican holiday "Cinco de Mayo”, Arnold Schwarzenegger former governor of California, Pope John Paul II in his first and last visit to Mexico, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis in his 2016 visit to Mexico and at the Monterrey Special Summit of the Americas for all the Latin-American presidents in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León Mexico in 2004. He often represents Mexico by performing the Mexican anthem in important sports events.[7]
In 2010 for his protagonist role of "Rafael Medina Nuñez" in Televisa's award-winning telenovela Hasta Que El Dinero Nos Separe, Pedro Fernández won the Premios TVyNovelas Award for Best Lead Actor of 2010, see TVyNovelas Award for Best Lead Actor.
A recent 2016 news article commented; "To hear the name Pedro Fernández (or as he is still called by many, Pedrito), everyone remembers that child who sang La de la Mochila Azul, which became the theme song for the film La niña de la mochila azul in 1979". Since that time he became one of the most recognized artists not only in Mexico but throughout Latin America for his music and acting which continues today.[8]
For his television roles, most recently Pedro has appeared as a team coach for La Voz Kids season three (2015) and season four (2016),[9] and as an official Presenter/Host for the Billboard Latin Music Awards for 2015 and 2016.[10]
In September 2016 Pedro collaborated with Grupo Cañaveral for their upcoming 20 year anniversary album. Grupo Cañaveral, led by Humberto and Emir Pabón and accompanied by Pedro Fernández recorded the song "Si Te Vas", authored by Pedro. This latest version of the popular song now has a Cumbia flavor. In October 2016 Pedro appeared on stage in his hometown of Monterrey Mexico with popular recording artist Thalía in front of an audience of 7 thousand YouTube at the Auditorio Citibanamex. "Thalía was a hit in Monterrey with her Latina Love Tour and gave her fans a surprise duet with singer Pedro Fernández.[12]Thalía invited Pedro to share the stage with her and together they performed 'De Ti' which excited the audience and made them rise up from their seats."[13]
Pedro continues touring and performing concerts with his Mariachi and is currently working on his next album.
