Pedro de Portocarrero
Pedro de Portocarrero (died 1600) was a Spanish clergyman. He was Bishop of Calahorra (March 1589 – January 1594), Bishop of Cordoba (1594–1597), Bishop of Cuenca (May 1597 – September 1600), and the Inquisitor General (1596–1599), against King Philip II of Spain Aragonese Secretary Antonio Pérez.
The Portocarrero family came from Portugal. He was probably one of the cadet sons of Juan de Portocarrero y Portocarrero, the wealthy ninth Señor of Moguer, married to powerful merchant woman María Osorio and 1st marquis of Villanueva del Fresno, province of Badajoz, title awarded in 1530 by Charles I of Spain, and lord also of Barcarrota, province of Badajoz, by purchase, since 1539.
He was honoured by mystical poet Frey Luis de León, or Fray Luis Ponce de León, suspicious to the Inquisition, with Jewish "conversos" ascendency, with what is described as "Oda II" from Frey Luis poetical works. There are also another "Oda XV" and "Oda XXII", both easily found through the internet.
