The SPICE Arena, previously known as the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA), is an indoor arena located in Penang, Malaysia.

Background

The SPICE Arena is part of the SPICE development project which, other than the Indoor Stadium, also includes a club, a public park and a 4 star hotel with retail shoplots.[1]

The arena is the largest multi-purpose indoor venue in Malaysia outside of Kuala Lumpur, and has a floor area of 3,000 square meters as well as 10,000 permanent seats and 3000 retractable seats. It can also accommodate up to 3,000 guests for a sit-down banquet or 140 standard exhibition booths.[2] The arena is partially built under the ground.[3]

History

The construction of the arena was completed in 2000 in time for the 2000 Sukma Games, which was one of the first events held in PISA.[4] It also hosted some events of the 2001 Southeast Asian Games.

In 2011, a public-private partnership (PPP) project was undertaken between the Penang Municipal Council (now known as Penang Island City Council) and Malaysian property developer SP Setia to complete the SPICE project, whereby SP Setia would bear most of the estimated RM300 million cost for the construction of the SPICE project, and would be given a 30-year concession to manage and maintain SPICE and collect the rental fees.[5]
