Penryn College is a mixed secondary academy school and Sports College in the Cornish town of Penryn, England, United Kingdom. It has 1,033 pupils in the age range 11 to 16 years.[1][2] The head teacher is Marie Hunter.
History
Established in 1957 in Falmouth, it moved to its present location in 1961, and attained Sports College status in 1998, the seventeenth school to do so.[3][4] A new £26 million building, completed in September 2008, has replaced the original block.[5] New facilities include a sports hall, activity suite, gym, dance studio and drama studio.
On 1 July 2011, Penryn College formally gained academy status.
Academic standards
After a disappointing set of exam results and a progress mark placing them second from bottom in the county league tables, Its latest Ofsted rating was grade 2 (good), a backwards step from the previous grade 1 (outstanding).[6] and the school has a "leading edge" designation from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.[3] Penryn College was listed as one of the hundred most improved schools by the Department for Education and Employment; other achievements include a South West Education Business Partnership Award, runner-up in the national "Family of Schools" Award, and the Sportsmark.[7]
