Pentagramma is a small genus of North American ferns. Until 1990 members of this genus were included in Pityrogramma, and agreement has not yet been reached regarding the species' taxonomy.[1] There are one to three species, with two species commonly described and named Pentagramma pallida and P. triangularis.[1]
The distribution of P. triangularis (goldback fern) extends from British Columbia through the southwestern United States into northwestern Mexico,[2] while P. pallida (pale silverback fern) is limited to the high mountains of California.
