Pioneer Career and Technology Center[1] is Ohio's 5th largest vocational school and serves the area around Richland County, Ohio and Crawford County, Ohio. Its training programs are open to juniors and seniors that are enrolled at one of the 14 partner schools.

About Pioneer

A Different Workforce: Pioneer Career and Technology Center officially opened in 1968 with a mission – For every graduate, a salable skill. Pioneer students learned their trades well and became productive members of their communities. Now, over 40 years later, Pioneer continues to help students jump-start their futures with career technical programs and academic courses that offer rigorous and relevant training to better prepare them for today’s high-tech workplace and further education.

The 21st Century Employee: Seventy-five percent of future jobs will be considered a skilled trade, and this will require a highly trained worker to compete in this changing economy. Skills taught at Pioneer prepare students to enter the trades or prepare them to continue training for a two- or four-year college degree.

Description of Facilities

Pioneer Career and Technology Center is located at 27 Ryan Road in Shelby, Ohio, in the Central Ohio Industrial Park. Classrooms and labs provide a comfortable, safe, spacious environment conducive to learning. Labs are furnished with up-to-date equipment. Hands-on learning is the focus of all programs. Ample parking is available.

High School Programs

Pioneer serves high school juniors and seniors offering over 35 career-training programs. Students focus on academic classes for half of the school day and experience hands-on learning the other half of the day in their career-technical lab and on the job. Pioneer programs are housed at these locations: Pioneer campus, partner schools (satellite programs) and the Pioneer Performing Arts Academy in Mansfield. Pioneer students graduate from their associate high school upon completion of all required course work and passage of the Ohio Graduation Tests.

College-Ready & Career Focused

Pioneer offers a seamless educational path with advanced college prep courses designed for students planning to continue their education at a college or technical school. Students may earn college credits while at Pioneer through articulation agreements with area colleges and tech schools.

Partner Schools

Post-Secondary Education Options (PSEO)

Post-Secondary Education Option classes are available to Pioneer students through North Central State College. Classes may be taken at Pioneer, the North Central State College campus, or at other colleges or universities. The student must provide transportation for courses taught at North Central State College or other universities.

Extracurricular Activities

Pioneer students are involved in sports and extracurricular activities at their associate school, and eligibility is determined by the associate school. Pioneer also offers a variety of student organizations designed to build leadership skills and reinforce program knowledge. These include: BPA - Business Professionals of America; DECA - an association for marketing students; FCCLA - Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; FEA - Future Educators Association for students in the Teaching Professions; FFA – Future Farmers of America for agricultural students; SkillsUSA - for students in the Health Academy, Industrial & Engineering Systems and Human Services; and Student Council.

To enroll in a career-technical program at Pioneer, high school students must be enrolled in one of Pioneer’s 14 partner schools or a school that is a member of the North Central Tech Prep Consortium. The student must be able to complete their high school graduation requirements two years and meet the requirements of the College Tech Prep Consortium.
