Qingdao University (simplified Chinese: 青岛大学; traditional Chinese: 青島大學; pinyin: Qīngdǎo Dàxué) is a key provincial research university located in Qingdao, China. Qingdao University traces its origin to 1909, when Deutsch-Chinesische Hochschule (German-Chinese College), the oldest predecessor institution of Qingdao University, was jointly established by the Chinese and German governments in Qingdao. In 1993, the former Qingdao University, Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Textile Engineering College, and Qingdao Normal College, merged to form the new Qingdao University. At present, QU is one of the best comprehensive universities in Shandong Province, recognized as a member of the national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program." With a strong profile in Medical Sciences, Textile and Design, Business, and liberal arts, QU serves 32,300 full-time undergraduate students, 7,400 graduate students, and 1,600 international students.
History
The history of Qingdao University dates back to 1909.[3] In 1908, representatives of China and Germany, Zhang Zhidong, Minister of Education of the Qing Empire, and Otto Frank, Sinologist from the University of Hamburg (German: Universität Hamburg), negotiated to establish a joint college in Qingdao. As start-up fund, the German government invested 600,000 marks, and the Chinese government 40,000 marks.[4] On September 12, 1909, German-Chinese College (German: Deutsch-Chinesische Hochschule, Chinese: 青岛特别高等专门学堂) was officially opened.[5] The first President was Georg Keiper, German Geologist and Navy Officer. In 1914, over 400 students were enrolled.[6]
The medical department of German-Chinese College is the predecessor of the current Medical College of Qingdao University. Due to the war, German-Chinese College closed in 1914. However, despite numerous wounds of war, the medical department has never stopped. It was called Qingdao Medical College, Qingdao Medical College of East Asia, and several others in different periods. In 1922, in order to continue higher education, the Northern Government intends to set up a comprehensive university in Qingdao. In 1924, Private Qingdao University was founded, disciplines included arts, science, law, business, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and forestry.
In 1929, National Qingdao University was founded on the basis of Private Qingdao University, adding literature, education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines. In 1932, National Qingdao University was renamed as National Shandong University. In 1937, the Sino-Japanese War broke out. In 1938, the school was closed. The war ended in 1945, and National Shandong University resumed in Qingdao, merging Qingdao Medical School and its affiliated hospitals.
In 1949, National Shandong University was renamed as Shandong University. In 1956, the School of Medicine was separated from Shandong University, and formed an independent establishment known as the Qingdao Medical College. 1958, Shandong University moved to Jinan. In 1978, Qingdao Medical College became the first master's degree granting units, professional settings from a single clinical professional to develop a multi-disciplinary medical schools. Thereafter, Qingdao Medical College gradually developed more solid academic strength.
In 1985, Qingdao University was re-established, with the educational goal of "high level distinctive university," and disciplines of arts, science, engineering, business and many other subjects. School construction and development were supported financially by the central government, and also academically supported by Nankai University, Tianjin University, University of Science and Technology of China, and Shandong University. In 1993, Qingdao University merged Shandong Textile Engineering Institute (山东纺织工学院), Qingdao Medical College (青岛医学院) and Qingdao Normal College (青岛师范专科学校).

Qingdao University consists of 25 faculties and departments as well as a graduate school. Courses are offered in 11 main Academic disciplines: Philosophy, Economics, Law, Literature, History, Natural sciences, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Education and Military sciences. There are 104 Undergraduate degree programs, 209 master's degree programs, 127 Doctoral degree programs, and 15 post-doctorate mobile stations. In addition, there are 7 professional master's degree programs in Law, Business Management, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry and Public Administration respectively.

International Education and Cooperation
Qingdao University persists in implementing the strategy of open running and promoting of international exchanges and cooperation in all respects. It has established relations with 176 universities in over 20 countries and regions, including the USA, UK, Germany, France, Austria, Japan, Korea, Russia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, etc. It has also developed over 60 education programs at various levels including teacher and student exchanges, joint training, and Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run education.
Qingdao University College of Medical Science is recognized by the World Health Organization and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.[8] Qingdao University is also authorized by the Ministry of Education of China to be one of the institutions of higher learning to offer courses in English for majors of Clinical Medicine.
Recruiting international students since 1987, Qingdao University was appointed as the "Chinese Educational Base" of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council in 2004, and the "Demonstration Base for International Students" of the Ministry of Education in 2014. Annually around 1,600 students from different countries and regions study at Qingdao University for both long and short-term programs. It has also established two foreign Confucius Institutes—Confucius Institute of Korea Sehan University and Confucius Institute of University of South Florida.
In 2007, the governments of Shandong Province, China and Bavaria, Germany established two special institutions—the Sino-German Cooperation Center of Colleges and Universities here at Qingdao University in Shandong and the Higher Education Center of Bavaria for Chinese Students at the University of Bayreuth, so as to further improve the educational cooperation between colleges and universities in these two areas. In 2009, Qingdao University became the “Training Base for Overseas Study” of the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education.
Campus
Qingdao University covers an area of 3.8 km² and includes five campuses in different parts of Qingdao, with the main campus located in the east part of Shinan District. Over 100 research labs, teaching and research facilities are well-equipped. The university library houses a collection of over 3,550,000 volumes.
Students and Faculty
It has about 37.000 students, from which over 5.000 are postgraduate students, and over 1.000 are international students. Since 1980, Qingdao University has received over 10.000 students from more than 60 countries. The university also has a group of reputed scholars known at home and abroad, of which 900 are professors. There are 23 academicians (including adjunct academicians) who are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
