R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital is a medical school and hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.[1] It was the first non-governmental medical college to be established in Imperial-Era Asia. It was formed to ensure self suffficiency (swaraj movement) in medical education, training and services in the colonial era, wherein most institutes were rather under the direct control of the British government. It was earlier under University of Calcutta (1916-2003) but is now under West Bengal University of Health Sciences (2003–present) like all other medical colleges which were initially under University of Calcutta. It is one of the premiere medical colleges of India and has the largest government run hospital in the state of West Bengal,India. It was ranked 1st in the east zone and 16th in the nation, among medical colleges, by The Times of India rankings. R.G. Kar Medical college and Hospital completed 100 years of its service in the year 2016 (1916-2016).[2]

History

Established in 1886 as The Calcutta School of Medicine, the school had no connected hospital and practiced out of the small Mayo Hospital.[2] In 1902, it moved to its own complex, including a school building and hospital. In 1904, it merged with the National College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal and, after a period of further growth, became the Belgachia Medical College in 1916.[2][3] From 1918 to 1948, the college was known as Carmichael Medical College in honor of Thomas Gibson-Carmichael, who was the Governor of Bengal when the college was inaugurated in 1916; the institution was given its current name on 12 May 1948 to honor Dr. Radha Govinda Kar who first conceived of it.[2][4][5] In May 1958, the college came under the control of the government of West Bengal.[2] With history of over 100 years and recent largescale improvement in academic and healthcare infrastructure the college was ranked and 23rd in 2012, 16th in 2015 and 14th in 2016 among medical colleges in India.[6]
