Christina McGeehan,[3] better known for her stage name Ryat (often stylized as RYAT[4] and pronounced "riot"[5]), is an American musician based in Los Angeles, California.[6]

Her 2012 album, Totem, was released on Brainfeeder.[7]

Early life

Christina McGeehan was born in New Jersey.[8] Ryat was created in 2006 when McGeehan moved to Philadelphia. There, she met DJ/producer King Britt who encouraged her to produce her own music. Ryat studied programming, producing and hosted improvisation sessions. Soon after, she met Taylor McFerrin who inspired her to create a live producers set up and mentored her in performing her music live.[9] Her first US and European tour consisted of improvisation with her production set up.[9]

Career

After Ryat released Avant Gold in 2011,[10] her live show got the attention of Flying Lotus who later invited her to join his label, Brainfeeder.[11] She relocated to Los Angeles and was inspired by the natural surroundings and mysticism.[12] The third album, Totem, was released on the label in 2012.[13]

In 2015, RYAT released her next body of music, titled "ALT MODE," which was written and performed for an Interactive Multi-Media and Dance Performance in Central Park. The piece was a collaboration with choreographer Kate Watson-Wallace.[14]

Style and influences

Ryat is known for her "maximalist production" in her approach,[15] often experimenting in electronics, odd time signatures, vocal looping and lush soundscapes.[16] She often combines classical cinematic sounds, with glitchy samples and big beats, often compared with the artists like Björk.[17] Her music has been described as "Beat Couture".[18]
