Baptist was born in Ireland sometime in the second quarter of the 18th century. She was part of the estimated 1,000-3,000 black people living in the country at the time. She was by profession a singer, and "enjoyed a successful career the length and breadth of the island from at least 1750 to the mid-1770s, appearing at venues from Cork and Brandon to Belfast."
