Rising Star is an upcoming Indian version of the international franchise series Rising Star,[1] a reality television singing competition. It is based on the Israeli singing competition HaKokhav HaBa (meaning The Next Star) made by Keshet Broadcasting Ltd. The program format lets viewers vote for contestants via mobile apps. The show is scheduled to premiere sometime in the first quarter of 2017 and will be broadcast on Colors TV. The series will be aired on weekends' nights.[2]

Shankar Mahadevan has been roped in as the first judge for the show.[2]

Production

On 16 October 2016, Variety had reported that Viacom18 had signed a licensing deal with Keshet International for the format rights to reality show Rising Star. The show is set to begin airing in the first quarter of 2017 on Colors TV.[3][4]

Show Format

In contrast to other singing competition TV shows which feature a cast of celebrity judges, 'Rising Star' features a cast of celebrity experts and considers the viewers at home the judges. During each performance, the audience at home is able to decide in real time whether or not a contestant is sent through to the next round by using a mobile voting app. While the viewers at home are considered the "judges", the expert panelists also may influence the vote but with only a small percentage of the total voting power. For eg – if the total voting power is 100% the judges may hold approximately 25%, thereby by giving the power to the people.[5]
