Robert Edward Barnes (born April 11, 1974) is a criminal tax attorney and business law and civil rights law advocate. Robert Barnes is the founder of Barnes Law LLP, a Los Angeles, California based law firm specializing in IRS investigations, tax fraud, asset recovery, and private banking.[1][2][3][4]
Background
Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States, Barnes attended and graduated from the boys college-preparatory school, The McCallie School, also located in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Barnes attended the private Ivy League research university Yale University from 1992-1996 in pursuit of his undergraduate degree in History,[5] but left in protest after Yale University announced it plans to discriminate against applicants who did not have familial ties to the university or lack of income.[6][7] Yale University subsequently changed its admissions policies and has kept to the "need-blind" policy to this day.[8]
Barnes did not return to Yale University. Instead, he completed his undergraduate work and received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
After completing his undergraduate course work, Barnes received a fellowship to attend law school at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Before establishing his law practice in Los Angeles, California, Barnes was a law partner at The Bernhoft Law Firm. It was at Bernhoft, that Barnes served as Wesley Snipes' tax defense lawyer alongside owner and managing partner, Robert Bernhoft.[9][10] In 2008, Robert Barnes represented Mr. Snipes for conspiracy to defraud the government and filing a false claim with the government. Mr. Snipes was acquitted of tax fraud but convicted of failure to file taxes.[11][12][13][14][15][16] After the verdict, Barnes said in reference to Mr. Snipes, "He will make full amends and pay for everything."[14]
