Rocky is the second video game based on the popular series of Rocky movies, released for the Sega Master System in 1987. The player must train Rocky Balboa before each fight to improve his skills. Rocky possesses a straight punch, a hook, an uppercut, and body punch as well as various combos.
Summary
The opponents, in order, are: Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, and Ivan Drago.
Fights are of 15 rounds duration, with an increasing level of difficulty depending on the opponent, and different strategies required to overcome each.
The game also features a two-player mode where player two can choose from any of the above opponents, while player one always controls Rocky.
Reception
Computer Gaming World in 1988 stated that Rocky had "the most eye-popping graphics".[2]
Alternate Versions
A spiritual successor to Rocky was released for the Master System in 1991, near the end of the system's lifespan under the title of Heavyweight Champ. The game improved upon the formula by incorporating the ability to choose from multiple boxers for both player one and player two, and sported richer, more defined graphics and characters. Gameplay elements were virtually identical, and the arena used in the Rocky game was re-used. In the U.S., Heavyweight Championship was released in 1990 for the Master System as James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing.
