The Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 is a turboshaft engine produced by Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Limited, a joint venture between Rolls-Royce plc and Turbomeca. The engine was designed to suit a wide range of military and commercial helicopter designs. The RTM322 can also be employed in maritime and industrial applications.
The first order for the RTM322 was received in 1992 to power 44 Royal Navy Merlin HM1s which subsequently entered service in 1998.[1] According to Rolls-Royce 1,500 engines are made or ordered, and about 80% of AW101's use the engine.[2]
In 2013, Turbomeca acquired the entire RTM 322 program. The engine is now 100% Turbomeca, with the French manufacturer responsible for both production and product support . The acquisition has enabled Turbomeca to strengthen its position in the high-power segment of the market, in preparation for the upcoming launch of the HPE (High-Power Engine) family of turbines within the 2,500 - 3,000+ shp bracket.[3]
