History
In 1826 Pope Leo XII founded the archdiocese as the Vicariate Apostolic of San Juan de Cuyothe from territory taken from the Diocese of Córdoba del Tucumán.[1] Pope Gregory XVI elevated it to a diocese on 19 September 1834. The diocese was elevated to an archdiocese by Pope Pius XI on 20 April 1934. On the same date it lost territory to create the dioceses of Mendoza and San Luis.[2]
