S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) is an autonomous research institute dedicated to basic research in mathematics sciences under the Department of Science and Technology of Government of India. It is located in West Bengal, Salt Lake, Kolkata. This institute was Named after the Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose and established in 1986. Prof. C. K. Majumdar was the founder director of this institute.

Research

The SNBNCBS has four departments:

Astrophysics and Cosmology

Mainly theory in Astronomy and Cosmology are done in this center. There are also faculties and students in Observational field. But till now it has no observatory available. So, people use to go other institutes to take data. Presently the construction of a new observatory is going on in Purulia, West Bengal.

Theoretical Sciences

People are working on Statistical Mechanics, High Energy Physics, Non-linear Dynamics, Quantum gravity, Mathematical Physics, Quantum Information, Lattice Gauge Theory etc.

Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences

Both experimental and theoretical Condensed matter physicist are on their fields. Some people are also working on a very hot topic: Nanophysics.

Chemical, Biological and Macro-molecular Sciences

The main interest in this department is study of complex molecular and hybrid systems (including biomolecules) using Experiments and Simulations, ultrasensitive & ultrafast spectoscopy techniques.

Courses

As this is a research institute mainly PhD program is done here. From 2001 Integrated PhD (MSc+PhD) program was started. After completion of two years of study, MSc degree is given by University of Calcutta. Formerly this degree was given by West Bengal University of Technology. Students of this institute can submit their Ph.D. thesis to Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta, West Bengal University of Technology or any other university which allows students to do so.[2]
