Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), is a non governmental, non profit organisation based in Chennai. Founded in 1984 by a group of philanthropists and mental health professionals[1] led by M. Sarada Menon, a psychiatrist by profession.[2] SCARF has established itself as a center of repute in rehabilitation and research in disorders of the mind.[3] SCARF is one of the very few NGOs in the world to be named as a collaborating centre of the World Health Organization for mental health research and training.[4]
Research
SCARF has been involved in several studies conducted by the World Health Organisation. Some of its collaborating partners in mental health research are World Health Organization, World Psychiatric Association, Johns Hopkins University, King's College London, Oxfam, Indian Council of Medical Research, AIIMS, NIMHANS and TISS.[5] Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University has approved SCARF as a centre for doctoral studies in 'Mental health and Social Sciences'.[6]
