The Beedie School of Business is the Faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1965, SFU is currently the largest business school in Western Canada . Beedie School's Executive MBA (EMBA) program, founded in 1968, is claimed to be the first of its kind in Canada. By 1982, the business discipline had grown to sufficient size to become its own distinct faculty at the university, creating the Faculty of Business Administration, and the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree [1].

The Beedie School of Business operates on all three Simon Fraser University campuses, with over 3100 undergraduate BBA students in the Vancouver suburbs of Burnaby and Surrey; over 350 MBA and graduate students in the Segal Graduate School of Business in downtown Vancouver; non-credit programs at the director, executive and management levels; and a Ph.D. program. Since 2000, the school has launched the Management of Technology MBA, the Master of Science in Finance program, and a full-time MBA designed for early career, younger graduates with a non-business undergraduate degree. In 2011, the school launched the world's first Executive MBA for the Americas in partnership with graduate business schools at Vanderbilt University (U.S.), Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (Mexico) and Institute of Management Foundation (Brazil). That same year, it launched Canada's first EMBA for Aboriginal Business and Leadership. In 2015, the school introduced the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization, a part-time certificate program providing students with the frameworks, perspectives, and techniques for fostering product development and commercialization.

The Beedie School of Business has achieved international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). The school has also committed to integrating the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). In 2011, the school was ranked among the Top 25 business schools in the world for management research. In a 2012 survey published by the Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria and presented to the Canadian Federation of Business School Deans (CFBSD), the Beedie School of Business ranked second nationally based on research productivity in the Financial Times top 40 publications (FT 40 journals).[2] The Beedie School of Business finished first in Western Canada with a score of 1.69, only 0.02 points behind the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

On February 9, 2011, the school received a donation in the amount of $22 million from alumnus Ryan Beedie and his father Keith, establishing the Beedie School of Business. On June 17, 2016, Beedie alumnus Charles Chang presented a $10 million gift to Simon Fraser University to establish the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship.

SFU Burnaby Campus

Burnaby

The Burnaby Mountain campus is home to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) undergraduate program, which hosts over 3,100 students.

Surrey

SFU's Surrey campus is a 30,000 square-metre erection located at Central City in Surrey. The building, designed by architect Bing Thom, has won numerous national and international awards.[3] The Beedie School of Business offers the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program at the Surrey campus.

Downtown Vancouver: Segal Graduate School of Business

A 1916 building located at the corner of Granville and Pender Streets in Vancouver’s downtown peninsula, the Segal Graduate School of Business is home to SFU's graduate business programs. It honors the university's former chancellor and SFU Beedie School of Business supporter Joseph Segal.

Opened in 2005, the 1916 temple bank building – previously the Western Canada headquarters for the Bank of Montreal—has been restored to its former state under architect Paul Merrick.

The building underwent a $20 million renovation, retaining its classic styling and modernizing it. The designers were able to retain many of the building's original features and materials, including marble columns, decorative plaster moldings, even the original cast-iron elevator and door frames, as well as stair balustrades. Two of the original vault doors were refurbished and installed as a decorative feature at the entrance to the student commons area. Network amenities are strictly modern. Fibre optic cabling, coupled with a hybrid telecommunications system that mixes conventional and new Internet technologies, ensure high speed communications with not only SFU campuses but also partner universities and distance education students.

The downtown campus of the Beedie School of Business is home to all graduate-level educational programs offered by the faculty: The Executive MBA, MBA, Management of Technology MBA, Master of Science in Finance, Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, and Ph.D.

SFU Surrey Campus

The unique three-term system at the Beedie School of Business allows for customization of programs which supports each individual students’ goals and lifestyles. Students are allowed to enroll for daytime or evening courses in the spring, summer or even fall semesters. Undergraduate business students may choose to study either at the Burnaby or Surrey campus. In a supportive environment, students can design their own degrees at their own pace.

Within the BBA program, students can choose to complete a program that is in the Business Faculty or to do a joint program, which enables them to combine business and programs within other faculties. And with the nine concentrations offered within the BBA program, the Beedie School of Business allows students to choose the courses which suit each individual’s preference.

Graduate Programs

SFU at Downtown Segal campus

Master of Business Administration

The MBA is a full-time, 12-month program for those with undergraduate degrees in areas other than business, and less than five years of professional work experience. Upon completion of the program, students may enter a three- to eight-month internship to gain essential work experience. The program is also focused on the importance of strategic, long-term decision making coupled with making current, day-to-day operational decisions brought on by dynamic environments and unforeseen circumstances [4]

Executive Master of Business Administration

For experienced managers, professionals and emerging business leaders, the Executive MBA is designed to develop leadership skills and core capabilities in strategic analysis and change management. Classes for this 19-month program are held Friday and Saturday on alternate weekends.

Americas MBA for Executives

The two-year degree program, a stream of SFU's Executive MBA program, provides 60 students with the opportunity to study management issues in each of the four largest economies in the Americas: Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United States. Along with the Beedie School of Business at SFU, participating schools include: FIA Business School, Fundacao Instituto De Administracao, São Paulo, Brazil; ITAM, Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico; and Vanderbilt University, Owen Graduate School of Management, Nashville, Tenn., USA.

Executive MBA in Aboriginal Business and Leadership

The Executive MBA in Aboriginal Business and Leadership explores contemporary business issues and knowledge while recognizing that the traditional protocols and ways of understanding the world are also growing and changing as new generations assume responsibility for moving forward. The program includes the core concepts and knowledge included in most MBA programs.

Master of Business Administration in Management of Technology

An MBA designed for those in the technology sector, the MOT MBA enables engineers and scientists to transition into management roles or, as managers, enhance their understanding of the unique demands of those sectors. This is a part-time program with classes held Monday and Wednesday evenings for 24 months.

Master of Science in Finance

The Master of Science in Finance (M.Sc. Finance) is an intensive 16-month, full-time program (with a 12-month option) designed to develop analytical and technical skills in finance and risk management.

Graduate Diploma in Business Administration

The Graduate Diploma is earned in 12 months of part-time study.

Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization

Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization is a part-time certificate program that provides students with the frameworks, perspectives, and techniques for fostering product development and commercialization, whether for an existing firm or with their own start-up venture. The Certificate is open to graduate students, post-doctoral students, faculty and recent alumni of both SFU and UBC graduate programs in science, engineering, health and environmental sciences.

PhD in Business Administration

The PhD is designed for those who want to develop strong research skills, publish and instruct at leading academic institutions. Each student is matched with a faculty member who guides the student’s research in an area of specialization based on their shared interests.

Jack Austin Centre for Asia-Pacific Business Studies

Jack Austin Centre for Asia-Pacific Business Studies is a joint venture of Beedie School of Business and Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The goal of the Centre is to carry out research, outreach and training activities on business issues that are relevant to Canada’s interests in the Asia Pacific region, The initial focus of the Centre will be on:

The centre was named to recognize Jack Austin’s exceptional contribution to Canada-Asia relations. Austin has championed stronger relations between Canada and Asia since 1971, when as deputy minister of Energy, Mines and Resources he was part of the first Canadian trade mission to China. He served as president of the Canada China Business Council for seven years and co-chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association for five. He was instrumental in establishing the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in 1984 and in creating an endowment for the foundation in 2005. Austin was a member of the Senate of Canada for 32 years, representing British Columbia. He retired in March 2007.
