Shahpur City
Shahpur City is a small but historically renowned located in district Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. It is located near the Jhelum River, which flows 3 km away in the west. It is the old district of Sargodha region.
In the 16th century here was the majority of Hindus and Sikhs, and its name was Laupur. A famous Sufi saint Shah Shams Shairazi came here in 1589-1590 from Delhi to groom the sun of Islam's publication. Here he started his work for the publication of Islam, and most of the population here became a Muslim. The name of this city replaced as Shahpur regards to Shah Shams Sherazi. (Shah is a cast and Pur mean residents of city)
In 1893, during the British Raj, Shahpur succeeded to get the district level and its became as the district headquarter. About 4 km away in eastward, the foundations of a new civil line constructed and all government offices built there. This new civil line area was named as Shahpur Saddar and west populated area as Shahpur City. (these both were known as Shahpur)
It was a flooded area, the government had to take too much damage. So in 1914, the district headquarter was moved from Shahpur to Sargodha, although the district continued to be known as Shahpur. In 1960 however, Sargodha District was created, and Shahpur District became Shahpur Tehsil — one of the tehsils in the district.
There are enough historical buildings, houses and temples. Lahori Gate is one of the most historical and famous bazaar gate. The famous Sufi saint Hazrat Shah Shams Sherazi and there sons also buried here.
