Lin Li-hui (Chinese: 林立慧; pinyin: Lín Lìhuì; born 16 April 1976), better known by her stage name Shu Qi, is a Taiwanese actress and model. She has also been credited as Hsu Chi and Shu Kei (Cantonese pronunciation of "Shu Qi").

Early life and career

Born in Xindian township, Taipei County (now New Taipei City), Shu Qi went to Hong Kong at the age of 17 to seek a film career. She eventually came under the management of Hong Kong film producer Manfred Wong, who signed her to several Hong Kong Category III films such as Sex & Zen II (1996). She was a soft-porn actress for a period of time. She also appeared in the Chinese edition of Playboy magazine.[1]

Shu Qi starred in Derek Yee's 1996 film, Viva Erotica, which was about the erotic film industry in Hong Kong, together with Karen Mok and Leslie Cheung. She received the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Viva Erotica at the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1997. Since then, she has appeared in Hong Kong films such as Portland Street Blues (1998), City of Glass (1998), the box office hit Gorgeous (1999), Stanley Kwan's The Island Tales (1999) and Hou Hsiao-Hsien's critically acclaimed Millennium Mambo (2000), for which she won the Best Actress award at the 2001 Golden Horse Awards and successfully made her transition into mainstream acting.

In 2002, Shu appeared in the French action film The Transporter, the first installment of the successful series.

Some notable films Shu starred in the early 2000s are: The Foliage, The Eye 2, Seoul Raiders, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Three Times. She won Best Actress awards at the Shanghai Film Critics Awards and Golden Horse Awards for her role in The Foliage and Three Times respectively.

In 2006, Shu participated in Korean film My Wife is a Gangster 3, acting opposite Lee Beom-soo. She also collaborated with famous Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro in Confession of Pain.

Shu Qi was a member of the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008. In the same year, she starred in a romantic comedy film, If You Are the One, directed by Feng Xiaogang. The film grossed over ¥364 million (US$53.7 million) at the Chinese box office and received positive reviews. Shu won the Outstanding Actress award at the 13th China Huabiao Awards. In 2009, she was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2011, Shu was cast in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's first wuxia film The Assassin, reportedly receiving ¥8.5 million film wages. The same year, she received her second Golden Horse Awards' Best Actress recognition for the film A Beautiful Life.

In 2013, Shu starred in Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, a fantasy comedy film loosely based on the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West. The film grossed a total of US$215 million worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing Chinese-language films.

In 2015, Shu starred in another huge blockbuster, Mojin: The Lost Legend, which surpassed the previous records held by Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons.

Other work

From 2006 to 2009, Shu Qi was selected by Kenzo Takada to be part of the third advertising campaign for its successful fragrance, Flower by Kenzo. She also worked as a spokesperson for Shiatzy Chen.

Shu Qi has been representing Frederique Constant in Asia as a brand ambassador since 2008. In 2009, she, along with Frederique Constant and Paint-a-Smile Foundation, repainted the murals on the walls of the cardiology department at the Beijing Children's Hospital.[2][3]

Shu Qi has also been Emporio Armani's Asian ambassador for its Fall/Winter 2010 collection. Shu Qi is now a brand Ambassador for Bulgari.

Personal life

Shu married Hong Kong actor-director Stephen Fung in 2016.[4][5] The two met on the set of the romance drama Bishonen in 1997, and dated for four years before marrying.[4][5]
