Ungmennafélagið Skallagrímur
Ungmennafélagið Skallagrímur, known as UMF Skallagrímur or just Skallagrímur, is a multi-sports club from Borgarnes, Iceland. Each sport has its own division with a separate board, football, basketball, badminton, swimming, weightlifting and athletics. Unusually for a sports club, there is a non-sport division, for acting (theatre), with the club staging a play every year.
Basketball
The club is currently playing in the Premier Division (Icelandic: Úrvalsdeild karla).[1] In recent years they've occasionally challenged in the top league, although they've also spent some time out of the top league. Their best result was getting to the play-off finals (national finals, akin to NBA finals) in 2006, although the team lost.
Football
The club has participated in the Icelandic leagues since 1966, although they didn't compete every year until the 1970s. The club spent most of its history in the third tier, although they've competed nearly ten times in the second tier. The club was promoted from the second tier for the first and only time in 1996, competing in the 1997 Icelandic Premier League, where they finished 9th out of 10 and were instantly relegated. 6 years later the club was in the fourth tier and hasn't left it since. After the 2011 season the club announced they wouldn't compete in 2012, but would try to compete again as soon as they could. The club has confirmed that they will compete in 2013. They have competed ever since. [2]
