Soil Machine Dynamics
Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd. (also known as SMD) is a North East England based engineering company specialising in subsea remotely operated vehicles.
The company builds subsea trenching, pipe/cable laying and mining machines as well as launch and recovery systems (LARS) on its main site, Turbinia Works on Davy Bank, Wallsend. A second production facility on the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate is used for the design and manufacture of work class ROVs such as those used in the oil and gas industry.
SMD worked with Nautilus Mining to develop the first seafloor mining machines. The system consists of three machines to level the seafloor in the extraction area, cut the deposits up and then extract to the vessel on the surface.
