Soundview Preparatory School is an independent, coed preparatory school that serves grades 6-12. It is located in Yorktown Heights, New York. It was founded in March 1989 by its Headmaster W. Glyn Hearn after a group of families came forward seeking an alternative school. It moved from its original location at St. John's Church in Pleasantville to the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, and then to an office building in Mount Kisco, New York, and finally moved its current location because the school grew in size. The school is based on the philosophy that students will grow academically and socially by learning in a non-competitive environment.
Extracurricular activities
Soundview has many clubs, each one hosted by a teacher, where students can meet others who share an immediate interest. Some clubs are the Knitting Club, the Gardening Club, the Politics Club, the Chess Club, the A Cappella Club, and the Yearbook Club. Usually, the clubs meet once a week. Soundview's athletes are the Soundview Bulldogs, and sports played throughout the year include soccer, basketball, bowling and Ultimate Frisbee. To foster a sense of community and school spirit, all students are encouraged to attend at least some games. In past years, the school has had an annual trip to a foreign country, and students have been able to visit Italy, England, Greece, China, Russia, and Argentina. Another way that Soundview helps its students feel a sense of community is by requiring six weeks of community service.
Soundview also has a mock trial team that started up in 2010.
