Sree Sundareswara Temple is located in the Kannur district of Kerala, India. It is in Talap, in Kannur municipality of Kerala. This temple is one of the largest temples in Kannur.

History of Sree Sundereshwara temple

Sree Sundereshwara temple of Kannur was made by Thiyyars of Kannur and consecrated by Sri Narayana Guru on the request of Thiyyars. The designs of this temple were made by Sri Chaithanyaall swami. Sree Narayana guru named the Shiva as Sree Sundereshwara by saying that all the people are beautiful, the place is beautiful thus named Lord Shiva as Sree Sunderehwara in this temple. This temple was built on March 16 in the year 1916. Except consecrating the idol, Sri Narayana Guru did not have any of his activities in Kannur. In fact he had once said that the life standards of Thiyyars of North Malabar are good and they need not have his service here. But on the persistent request of Thiyyars he agreed to come to Kannur and consecrated the idol. This temple follows Brahminical way of worship though the poojari is Ezhava, which is distinct from the inherited way of worship of Thiyyars. Vayanattukulavan is the kuladeivam of Thiyyars and Muthappan is the Kuladevatha. Thiyyars respect Sri Narayana Guru as a social reformer.

Sree Bhakti Samvardhini yogam

Sree Sundereswara Temple is managed by Sree Bhakti Samvardhini yogam. The president of this organisation is KP Balakrisnan. The melshanthi in Sree Sundereshwara Temple is E.G Rajan Shanthi. Shanthis of this temple are Suresh shanthi and Praveen shanthi. The keze shanthimar in temple are Biju shanthi, Vipin shanthi, Raghu shanthi, Dhanesh shanthi, Praveen shanthi, and Shiju shanthi.

Festival

The main celebration of this temple occurs on Malayalam month Meenam. Those celebration days are national festival of Kannur. The thantri of this temple is Sree Tangapan tantri. Bhakthisamvardhini of Kannur run educational institutions but they forgot community interests. No concession given to Thiyya students in the matter of admission and fees etc. Nowadays things have changed considerably in the temple and more prominence is given to Sri Narayana Guru in the temple then the main deity Lord Shiva. Marriage is now conducted in the Mandapam before the photo of Narayana Guru instead of before the main deity.

This temple is the heart of all Kannur citizens.
