St. Mary's Colgan High School is a parochial, Roman Catholic high school in Pittsburg, Kansas in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wichita. St. Mary's Colgan is under the direction of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish. The school serves students in grades K-12. The athletic teams at St. Mary's-Colgan are referred to as the Panthers and are classified as a 2-1A school according to the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

History

In January 2012 Mr. John Kraus, President of Schools, announced that he will be leaving SMC for a similar position in Colorado. In February 2012, Rev. Mike Baldwin announced that Rev. Chad Arnold, Associate Pastor and School Chaplain, will be the next President of Schools, effective July 2012.

Extracurricular activities

St. Mary's Colgan provides a wide variety of athletic and non-athletic programs. Athletic teams are known as the "Panthers" and classified as a 2A school according to the KSHSAA. Throughout its history, St. Mary's Colgan has won many state championships in various sports and other non-athletic programs.

Athletics

Football

One of the most successful sports programs at St. Mary's Colgan is the football team, which has won 7 state championships and has produced several collegiate athletes. From 1974-2003, the St. Mary's Colgan football team has had 7 undefeated seasons. Additionally, the team won 66 consecutive games from 2001-2004. The football team competes on Hutchinson Field which it shares with other local schools as allowed by the Pittsburg Public Schools. The current Head Coach is Chuck Smith.

Baseball

Baseball has been the most successful program during the history of St. Mary's Colgan. Throughout its history, the Panther baseball team has won 16 state championships and has produced a few collegiate athletes, similar to the football program. The Panther baseball team made a total of 30 championship game appearances from 1964-2011. Gary Schiefelbein set the school record of stolen bases in a season with 45 in 1992. Colgan went on a 7-peat state championship winning streak from 2004-2010. The current Head Coach is Mike Watt.

Although the athletic programs have been the most recognized extracurricular activities, St. Mary's-Colgan also has a cheer squad and dance team that have won many awards as well. Both squads have had team members that have been recognized at the national level.
