St John of God Ballarat Hospital

St John of God Ballarat Hospital is a division of St John of God Health Care.[1]

Founded in 1915, the 196-bed hospital is located in the Central Business District of Ballarat, a city in Victoria, Australia. It is the largest not-for-profit hospital in regional Victoria.[2]

In 2010, St John of God Ballarat Hospital delivered 485 babies, a record for the facility.[3]

Facilities

A $65 million redevelopment of the hospital was completed in 2009; the new building houses six wards, including inpatient rehabilitation, oncology/medical, surgical/urology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and cardiology.[4]

St John of God Ballarat Hospital is home to the region’s first cardiac and vascular angiography suite, as well as its first operating theatre with digital equipment.[5]

Services

The hospital provides a range of health care services to residents living in Ballarat and Western Victoria, specialising particularly in the following services:

Research

The hospital works in conjunction with Ballarat Health Services as part of St John of God Health Care’s Joint Human Research Ethics Committee.

The Joint Committee has a number of functions, including considering ethical implications of proposed research, maintaining a register of research projects and ensuring that ongoing projects continue to adhere to ethical guidelines and legal responsibilities.[6]

Ballarat Cancer Centre

Along with Ballarat Health Services, Austin Health and the Ballarat community, St John of God Ballarat Hospital was part of a successful push in 2010 to secure State and Federal funding for a $56.5 million Ballarat Cancer Centre.[7]

The centre will include two new linear accelerators, four radiation oncology bunkers, four extra chemotherapy chairs and a computed tomography scanner. It is expected to be completed by early 2013.[8]
