Stephen F. Mandel (born March 12, 1956) is founder of the hedge fund Lone Pine Capital.[2]

Early life and education

Raised Jewish,[3] Mandel is a 1974 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and a 1978 graduate of Dartmouth College as Bachelor of Arts / Science major in government and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.[2] He also has an M.B.A. from Harvard University.[1]

Career

From 1980 to 1984,[2] he worked at Mars & Co as a senior consultant[4] and then from 1984 to 1990,[2] he worked as a consumer-retail analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co.[5] before working as a consumer analyst and eventually managing director at Tiger Management,[2] a hedge fund founded by Julian Robertson. In 1997, he left Tiger and founded his own hedge fund, Lone Pine Capital LLC[1] (named after a Dartmouth College pine tree that survived an 1887 lightning strike).[6]

Forbes listed Stephen Mandel as one of the 40 Highest-Earning hedge fund managers in 2012.[7]

Philanthropy

He is chairman of Dartmouth's board of trustees[9] and also serves on the National Board of Directors at Teach for America.[10] He founded two charitable foundations: the Zoom Foundation and the Lone Pine Foundation.[11]

Personal life

In 1982, he married Susan Joy Zadek of Baltimore whom he met at Harvard.[12][13][14] They have three children.[1]
