Susan Mary Hayman[1] (born 28 July 1962) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. She is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Workington after winning the seat in the 2015 general election.[2]

Early Life

Born in Upper Bucklebury in Berkshire, she attended St Bartholomew's comprehensive school in Newbury[3] before reading English at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now part of Anglia Ruskin University).

Career

Hayman previously stood for Preseli Pembrokeshire in 2005[4] and for Halesowen and Rowley Regis in 2010, narrowly losing each time.[5]

Prior to her selection as Labour's candidate for Workington, she was a councillor on Cumbria County Council and had worked in social services.[6] Upon election, she became the first female MP to represent a constituency in Cumbria.[7]

In September 2015 she was appointed to Labour's front bench as an Opposition Whip for the shadow Home Office and Women and Equalities teams.[8]

In October 2016, following Jeremy Corbyn's re-election as Labour leader, Hayman was appointed as Shadow Minister for Flooding and Coastal Communities in the opposition's front-bench Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) team.[9]
