TERI University was established on 19 August 1998 and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a deemed to be university in 1999.[1] Set-up as the TERI School of Advanced Studies in 1998, the institution was subsequently renamed the TERI University.[2] In the period since its inception, the university has developed and evolved as a research university exploring the frontiers of knowledge in areas of major significance to human endeavour.[3] It has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council as a 'A' grade university on 23 March 2013 for a period of 5 years with 3.26 cpga.[4][5]

The University offers PhD programmes in Biotechnology, Regulatory & Policy aspects, Energy & Environment, Natural Resources, Water Resources, Business Sustainability. Masters programmes are offered in Sustainable Development, Sustainable Development, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management, Resource and Environmental Economics, Climate Change Science and Policy, Renewable Energy Technologies and Management, Water Resources Management, Geoinformatics, Plant Biotechnology, Business Sustainability and in Infrastructure Management.[6] The university transcends traditional teaching, and its courses attract students from various fields like economics, geography, and engineering. This has allowed many different perspectives into the curriculum, which provides a holistic approach to study.[7]

The foundation of TERI University came about as an extension to the consultancy and environment-related activities that were carried out by TERI, its parent body, a prominent nonprofit organisation devoted to environmental causes.[8]

Campus

The TERI University is situated at Plot No. 10, Institutional Area, in a modern green building. The campus was inaugurated by the President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil,[9] on 11 September 2008. While inaugurating the green campus, the president observed that it was "an exemplary example of combining traditional values of conservation and preservation of energy while building a state of the art campus."[10] The university puts its theory to practice by building an energy efficient campus showcasing the concept of modern green buildings. Besides an innovative, energy saving architectural design, the building is equipped with a number of other cutting edge technologies that help reduce the energy consumption by 60% and potable water use by 25%.[11] The campus is equipped with three types of cooling systems: the Earth Air Tunnel (EAT), Variable Refrigerant Volume System (VRV) and Thermal Mass Storage (TMS). The EAT used in the hostel block uses the heat sink property of the earth to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the building, saving up to 50% energy as compared to the conventional system.[12]

Before moving into the Vasant Kunj campus, the university was housed in the Darbari Seth block of India Habitat Centre from 1998 to 2008.

The university has two faculties, the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Policy and Planning, which offers a wide range of master's and doctoral courses. Master's courses include MA, MSc, MBA, LLM and MTech.

Programmes and Research are conducted in the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Energy and Environment, Center for Bioresources and Biotechnology, Department of Biotechnology, Coca-Cola Department of Regional Water Studies, Department of Policy Studies, Department of Business Sustainability and Center for Regulatory and Policy Research.

Events

The BLISS (Building Learning in Sustainability Science) School on Sustainability is a series of five-day events organized by TERI University to train and prepare the stakeholders for forthcoming sustainable development challenges, and to instill in them sensitivity towards people and the planet. The aim is to generate awareness and create a campaign to champion the cause of sustainability and sustainable development in both the local and the global context. The programme is held at TERI University, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Resource persons include faculty members and research professionals with an expertise in teaching and research in different areas of sustainability, energy, and policy. The programme is open to individuals from all walks of life. Policymakers and students who are curious to learn about sustainable consumption and production and the efficient use of resources for sustainable development are encouraged to apply.

Retopia is the annual cultural and technological festival of Department of Energy and Environment at TERI University, New Delhi. Retopia refers to an ideal state or situation, evolving from the English word 'utopia'. The objective of the festival is to bring together government, academics, industry and other practitioners on a common platform to discuss clean energy prospects on environmental, technical and commercial lines.

University partnerships

TERI University signed a memoranda of understanding (MoU) with several institutions with the aim of facilitating a mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources, and ideas.[15] In February 2002, TERI University entered into a memorandum of understanding with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University.[16] In February 2003, TERI University signed a MoU with Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, USA. In April 2005, the University entered into a MoU with the University of Nottingham, UK. In September 2007, TERI University signed a MoU with Michigan State University, USA.[17] In November 2007, TERI University signed a MoU with University of New South Wales, Australia.[18] In 2007 itself TERI University signed an agreement of cooperation with Freie University Berlin, Germany.[19] In February 2008, TERI University signed MoUs with University of Iceland, Iceland and North Carolina State University, USA.

The UNESCO Chair on Climate Science and Policy has been established in TERI university. Under this chair, the M.Sc in climate science and policy has been initiated with support from UNESCO.[20]

E-learning initiatives

TERI University is a part of the Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research[21] initiative of the UNU - Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS)[22] This is essentially a network of several leading higher education institutions in Asia and the Pacific that have committed to work together to integrate sustainable development into postgraduate courses and curricula. As a part of this initiative, a postgraduate programme on public policy and sustainable development has been started in TERI University.[23]

TERI University has been selected by the John D. MacArthur and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, globally headquartered in Chicago, as one of 10 universities worldwide to receive significant support in the amount of $900,000 to create a new master's degree program in Development Practice.MacArthur Foundation has awarded $7.6 million to seed the creation of Master’s Development Practice (MDP) programs that will provide rigorous post-graduate training for a new generation of development experts.[24][25][26]

University newsletter

The university has a newsletter called Offprint.[27] The department of business sustainability has a newsletter named Connect, which has the theme of sustainability and infrastructure issues in India.[28]

Awards

In 2012, the university was given the India Today Award for the Most Innovative Curriculum, for "incorporating elements in education that are the need of the hour by understanding and adapting to change."[29]

In 2013, the school was awarded as the "Greenest University and Research Institution" by RTCC at COP 19 at Warsaw.
