Takaoka Castle

The site of Takaoka castle is now Takaoka Kojo park, which has many cherry trees.

Takoaka Castle (高岡城 Takoaka-jō) was a Japanese castle in Takaoka, Toyama Japan. It was originally constructed in 1609, and was only used for a few years before being dismantled. The site of its ruins are now a park.[1] The castle is designated one of Japan's Top 100 Castles by the Japanese Castle Foundation.[2]

History

The castle was originally constructed by Maeda Toshinaga in 1609, following the destruction of Toyama Castle by fire. The castle was then decommissioned in 1615, so had a very short period of usage.[1] It was demolished under the one castle/one domain policy of the Tokugawa shogunate.[3]

Current site

The ruins of the castle are mainly just stone walls.[1] The ruins sit at the Takaoka Kojo Park, which was established in 1875. The park's cherry trees are the town's major location for cherry blossom viewing.[3]
