Teague Egan (born July 6, 1988) is an American businessman, entrepreneur, investor, inventor, and philanthropist. He is the founder and CEO of 1st Round Enterprises.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] At age 21, his label 1st Round Records released Sammy Adams debut album Boston’s Boy, which reached #1 on the iTunes hip-hop charts.[9] Shortly after, at age 22, Egan became the youngest ever certified contract agent by the National Football League Players Association and first prior to graduating college.[2][10]

Philanthropy is immensely important to Egan along with his accomplishments in the business world.[11] Most of his philanthropic efforts are associated with the Thomas E. Smith Foundation[11] and Kindness365, which he founded is 2016. He is the co-founder of Dance For Paralysis, The Reality Ride Challenge, and Kindness365.[11][12][13]

After graduating in business entrepreneurship at the University of Southern California, Egan went on to complete the Executive Program in exponential technology including artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and nanotechnology at Singularity University.

Early life

Teague Egan was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and attended Pine Crest School before he graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 2007.[3]

Career

Record Label

Egan started 1st Round Enterprises out of his college dorm room in 2008, with classmate Sterling Brewster, hosting music events around Los Angeles.[14][15] Quickly after in 2009, Egan co-founded 1st Round Records, an independent record label with partner and friend Zack Johnson. In March 2010, the company released Sammy Adams debut album Boston’s Boy, which reached number one on the iTunes hip-hop charts.[9] In March 2016, the label released Sammy's sophomore album The Long Way,[16] which reached number four on the iTunes charts. The label has gone on to sign numerous acts such as Bridge, Forever Kid, Yonas, and Robert Lawrence across different genres including hip hop, pop, R&B, and electronic music.[17][18]

Sports Technology

Egan started 1st Round Athletics when he became an NFLPA certified contract agent in October 2010 at age 22, making him the youngest certified agent in the history of the National Football League.[3] In certifying Egan, the NFLPA waived its requirement that agents hold an undergraduate and postgraduate degree on the basis of Egan’s negotiation experience from prior business ventures. He was the first person to obtain a contract agent certification from the NFLPA while still an undergraduate student.[6]

Egan transitioned the company to focusing on technology when the NFLPA told him that he would no longer be permitted to represent NFL players.[11] His sports business now focuses on two things: patented energyDNA® technology -- the first ever graphene bi-component fiber, yarn, and fabric that immensely increases circulation,[19][20] and a shoe technology called Ellipse tech, which looks to assist in breaking the two hour marathon mark -- one of the last big barriers standing in the track and field world.[11]

In 2014, 1st Round Athletics became the Official Apparel Supplier to the FIA Formula E Championship. In addition to outfitting all of the Formula E personnel, the company also supplied the official Formula E clothing merchandise.[21][22]

Controversy

In November 2010, he was found to have given a free ride in his personal golf cart to USC football player Dillon Baxter, which was a violation of National Collegiate Athletic Association rules concerning extra benefits to student-athletes.[1] Authorities deemed the one block golf cart ride to be worth a value of $5, and ordered Dillion to donate the $5 total to a local charity of his choice as repayment for the ride.[23][24] In December 2010, Egan’s contract agent certification was revoked by the NFLPA, which cited his gifting of a ride to Baxter in its revocation.[25][26] USC went on to institute a new athletes and agents policy, which required "advance notification from all students, staff and third parties about any involvement with a sports agent prior to any interaction with student-athletes on USC's campus.”[23] This has become known as the “Teague Egan rule.”

Angel Investor and Venture Capitalist

Within 1st Round Enterprises, Egan’s company also has a venture capital arm that has invested in numerous startup companies including the fashion label UNCL, a comfort loungewear clothing brand,[6][8] Humin, a mobile contacts technology application,[11][27] BPG Werks, a power sports machine manufacturer, Muzik Headphones, the first smart, connected headphones,[11] Enplug, a real time social media software system,[11] Actavalon, a preclinical pharmaceutical company developing a single, broad spectrum, drug focused on targeting and eradicating human cancer cells of all types including breast, lung, pancreatic, and colon cancer among others, which Egan also sits on the Board of Directors,[28][29] on-demand massage app called Soothe, Invicta Medical, a non-invasive sleep apnea solution, and a new Hawaiian poké food concept called Sweetfin Poké, among many others.

Philanthropy

Most of Egan’s philanthropic initiatives up to this point have been in association with, and to benefit, the Thomas E. Smith Foundation,[11] a nonprofit foundation created by Thomas Smith to find a cure for paralysis. He also founded Kindness 365.

Thomas E. Smith Foundation

Egan sits on the Board of Directors for the Thomas E. Smith Foundation. He is the co-founder of Dance For Paralysis,[11] the outreach division of the foundation that produces charity concerts with Krewella and Sammy Adams. He is also the co-founder of the Reality Ride Challenge, an event within the foundations reactive division, that saw Egan and Smith cycle 2109 miles from Boston to Miami, and raise $100,000 for The Miami Project and paralysis research.[11][12][13][30]

Reality Ride Challenge

On March 25, 2015, Egan and Smith, co-founders of the Reality Ride Challenge, set out from Boston, Massachusetts to Miami, Florida on a 2,109 mile bike ride to raise money and awareness for paralysis. The ride took them 38 days to complete, and they raised $100,000 for The Miami Project.[11][12][13][30] The event was sponsored by 1st Round Athletics.[31]

Kindness 365

Egan founded the 501c3 nonprofit Kindness365 in February 2016 with Pasha King. On July 1, 2016 he started traveling the entire United States for 365 days on the kindness bus, to all 50 states, to do random acts of kindness and bring unity back to America.[11]

Entrepreneurship

Egan was one of the original founding ambassadors of the Kairos Society, an international nonprofit organization that seeks to develop entrepreneurs from universities around the world. The organization supports programs at over 100 universities in 35 countries. He is the director of its Alumni Committee.[32] He also sits on the board of advisors of the Nantucket Project, an event that aims to create "a powerful distillation of ideas that will spark meaningful conversations and lead to meaningful change."[33]

Family

Egan lives in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles, California. His father, Michael Egan, was the founder of Alamo Car Rental, and was previously involved in Nantucket Nectars, and theGlobe.com.[2][34][35] Teague Egan co-founded 1st Round Enterprises with his brother Riley Egan, who is an actor and producer,[36] and serves as president of 1st Round Pictures.[8]
