Tetsu is a modern Japanese restaurant located in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City.[1] Conceived by Michelin-starred chef Masa Takayama, Tetsu serves a Yakitori-based menu with an emphasis upon grilled fare.[2] Similar to Takayama’s other restaurant ventures, Tetsu features both a la carte and Omakase menus. The restaurant will feature two floors, with a casual ground floor space featuring cocktails and small plates, and a cellar space which will feature a twenty-course tasting menu.[3]

Designed by architecture firm MNDPC, Tetsu is currently under construction as of November 2015.[4]

Background

Prior to Tetsu, chef Takayama has opened three other major ventures, beginning in 2004 with his eponymous three Michelin-starred restaurant, Masa, in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle in New York City, barMASA in the Aria Resort & Casino on The Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, and most recently Kappo Masa, within the flagship location of the Gagosian Gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood.[5]

Tetsu, executed by New York City-based architecture firm MNDPC, is located in a nationally-landmarked “cast-iron” building, renowned for its architectural significance in New York City. The design of the space features a play on the original structure’s materials, using iron, blackened steel, and timber to create a modern, yet historically responsive design. Executed in conjunction with structural engineering firm Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger, the design of the space weaves historic and modern elements together, combining exposed cast iron columns with new steel structural and architectural elements, as well as furniture developed by New York City based craftsman Andre Joyau.

Tetsu is currently under construction as of November 2015.[6]

Tetsu is open in 2016, but much smaller than the plans described above.[7]
