The Awesomes is an animated comedy series created by Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker, streamed on Hulu as a "Hulu original". The show follows a group of superheroes who step in and replace the members of a legendary but disbanding superhero team. Under new leadership, The Awesomes attempt to put themselves back together in the face of intense media and government skepticism. Meyers and Shoemaker serve as executive producers alongside Lorne Michaels. It debuted on August 1, 2013 and ended on November 3, 2015.

Characters

The Awesomes

Supervillains

The Astoundings

A villainous super-team on Earth-4, also known as Opposite Earth, and are the evil counterparts of the Awesomes.

The P.R.I.C.K.S.

A super villain team formed by Malocchio Jr and Elliot Levy-Apelstien for the sole purpose of destroying the Awesomes during the episode 'Tim Goes to School' and since then they have been getting a new member every episode i.e. the main villain of that episode. The acronym stands for Primates Really Into Crime and Killing Sprees.

The Replacement Awesomes

After Prock's team is kicked off the Awesomes after the city is in ruins, Mr. Awesome (who has turned evil and caused the carnage in secret) takes over with Perfect Man and enlists a new team. They are apparently older members of the Awesomes, but all is not what it seems.

Dames of Danger

A female black ops team made up of solely superheroines who teamed up with Gadget Gal, Concierge and Hotwire against Backstory. Their base is any female bathroom and they receive their instruction from Mr. Danger (who is later fired, then arrested for taking secret pictures of the Dames in the bathroom using his hidden cameras (the disturbing implications of which are often brought up)), later replaced with an African-American man named Calvin Anderson.

Others with superpowers

Euro-Awesomes

A European version of the Awesomes. They have the name because when Mr. Awesome founded the team he forgot to secure international naming rights. Each member represent a different European country. They first appear in the episode "Euro-Awesomes".

Non-Powered Humans

Production

In July 2007, Syfy gave a script commitment to the series.[1] Syfy later passed on making the show, but MTV gave it a script commitment in June 2009.[2] After MTV passed, Hulu gave it a 10 episode, straight to series order in April 2013.[3]

The show marks Hulu's second foray into original scripted programming. The first season premiered online on August 1, 2013. On September 19, 2013, it was reported that Hulu had announced The Awesomes had been renewed for a second season.[4][5] The second season premiered on August 4, 2014.[6] On August 19, 2014, Hulu renewed The Awesomes for a third season.[7] On December 17, 2015, Hulu canceled The Awesomes after three seasons and did not renew it for a fourth season due to low ratings.[8] There were no plans during production to release DVDs of the show in the United States as it was a "Hulu Original".[9]

Connection to Saturday Night Live

The Awesomes has a strong association with the NBC weekly TV series Saturday Night Live, starring many current and former SNL cast members including Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Taran Killam, Bobby Moynihan, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, Will Forte, Amy Poehler, Kate McKinnon, Colin Quinn, Fred Armisen, Tina Fey, Andy Samberg, Chris Kattan, Cecily Strong, Vanessa Bayer, Noël Wells, Nasim Pedrad and Aidy Bryant as well as SNL writers Steve Higgins, Emily Spivey, Paula Pell, Tim Robinson, Alex Baze and John Lutz. Lorne Michaels serves as executive producer, as he does with many other SNL-associated shows. Meyers created the show and Meyers, Killam, Thompson, and Hader all have starring roles while Moynihan, Dratch, Rudolph, Forte, Poehler, McKinnon, Strong and Quinn each have either recurring roles or play various small parts. Of these cast members and writers, Colin Quinn is the only one whose time at SNL did not overlap with Seth Meyers'.

Connection to MADtv

Ike Barinholtz, Bobby Lee, Josh Meyers, Taran Killam, and David Herman were all cast members from the Fox series MADtv.
