The Bunyadi was a controversial naked restaurant in Elephant and Castle, London that claimed to be the first naked venue in the city. 'The idea was to experience pure liberation'.[1] It shut its doors temporarily in August 2016 with intention to transform itself into a private membership club in the city and also to open a branch in Paris.[2]
History
The Bunyadi project was announced by Lollipop on 19 April 2016 and opened on 11 June 2016. The company is also known to be behind Locappy, London's neighbourhood mobile app, now Hoot.London.
The concept was coined by Seb Lyall and his teams that was behind another controversial owl bar and Shoreditch's Breaking Bad cocktail bar ABQ. Lyall believed that people should get the chance to enjoy and experience a night out without any impurities: no chemicals, no artificial colours, no electricity, no gas, no phone and even no clothes if they wish to. His idea was to experience true liberation.
In spring 2016 the restaurant receive enormous international media coverage that resulted in over forty thousand of pre-bookings.
Concept
The Bunyadi is split into clothed and unclothed sections. The customer are asked to proceed via the changing room and remove all clothing but a provided gown. They can then choose whether or not to keep it on. The venue can sit up to 42 persons.
