The Comeback Kid is a 1980 American made-for-television romantic comedy sports film starring John Ritter, Susan Dey and Doug McKeon which was broadcast on ABC on April 11, 1980.

Plot

Bubba Newman, a baseball player from the minor league decides to quit baseball and do something else with his life because he feels "down and out". Bubba gets a renewed look at life when he becomes a coach for a group of kids who are underprivileged and finds romance.

This was sort of like a who's who from television history with Ritter (Three's Company); Dey (The Patridge Family); Gregory (Barney Miller); Licht (Valerie/The Hogan Family); Lembeck (One Day at a Time) and Kim Fields (The Facts of Life). It also stars a Patrick Swayze in a very minor role as his career was just getting off the ground.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Licht's character gets hit by a car as he is racing to meet the returning Bubba Newman when the Coach comes back to the team. The character of Paul dies which ultimately brings the group and their coach even closer.
