The Unknown Girl (French: La Fille inconnue) is a 2016 Belgian-French drama film directed by the Dardenne brothers. Starring Adèle Haenel, Olivier Bonnaud, Jérémie Renier, and Louka Minnella, the film tells the story of a female medical doctor who sets out to find the identity of an unknown young woman who died after she was refused surgery.[2]

It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[3][4] The film was released in Belgium on 5 October 2016 by Cinéart and in France on 12 October 2016 by Diaphana.[5]

Production

In April 2015, Adèle Haenel joined the cast of the film, with Luc Dardenne
Jean-Pierre Dardenne directing from a screenplay they wrote.[6] The Unknown Girl is produced through the directors' Belgian company Les Films du Fleuve in collaboration with the French company Archipel 35. Filming began in October 2015 and ended on 22 December.[7]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on 18 May 2016.[3][4] Prior to, Sundance Selects acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.[8] Due to mixed critical response received by the film, the Dardenne brothers have made extensive cuts to the film after the Cannes Film Festival, the film becoming seven minutes shorter than the original cut premiered at Cannes. Luc Dardenne stated that "There are several critics who are also friends who liked it a lot but thought there were certain places in the film that didn’t work very well. I believe it was that which prompted our concern. We were ready to make changes." The new cut was officially shown in June at the Institut Lumière in Lyon, France.[9][10][11] The film will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival,[12][13] and the New York Film Festival on 12 October 2016.[14][15] The film will be released in Belgium on 5 October 2016.[16] It will be released in France on 12 October 2016.[5]

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 58% approval rating based on 24 reviews, with an average score of 5.2/10.[17] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 58, based on 10 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[18]
