Things to Come (French title: L'Avenir) is a 2016 French-German drama film written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve and starring Isabelle Huppert.[5][6] Principal photography began on 22 June 2015 in Paris.[3] It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.[7][8] At Berlin, Hansen-Løve won the Silver Bear for Best Director.[9]

Production

Hansen-Løve stated that she wrote the role of Nathalie with Isabelle Huppert in mind.[10] She also admitted that the character of Nathalie was loosely based on her own mother who was a philosophy professor who separated from her husband later in life.[11]

Critical response

Things to Come received critical acclaim. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 100% "Certified Fresh" rating, based on 69 reviews, with an average score of 8.2/10.[12] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 87, based on 21 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[13]
