Tilden Middle School is a public middle school for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 located in Rockville, Maryland. Students who attend Tilden are from the following elementary schools: Farmland, Garrett Park and Luxmanor. After completing 8th grade, students go on to attend Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland.
History
Tilden was originally located at 6300 Tilden Lane Rockville, MD 20852. At the time it fed into Woodward High School and later into both Woodward and Walter Johnson High Schools. Woodward High School was closed after the 1986-1987 school year. Tilden moved into the Woodward building in 1991 and the old Tilden location became the middle school holding site for Montgomery County middle school students while their schools were undergoing renovation/rebuilding. Tilden is scheduled to move back to the original location (after its renovation takes place) in 2019. The Tilden mascot used to be the Tilden Trojans.
The building housing Tilden was once called Charles Woodward High School, but the name was changed to Tilden Middle School at Charles W Woodward. The student population of Tilden was reduced after the reopening of North Bethesda Middle School and the loss of 3 feeder schools.
Awards and recognition
Tilden is among the few public middle schools in Maryland to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10. This school has an average Parent Rating of 4 out of 5 stars, based on reviews from 15 parents.[3]
Academics
Academics are very good, with an average of about 70% of students from each grade on the honor roll. Many of which stay on the honor roll for their entire 3 years.
Performing arts
Tilden is well known for its musical program, which includes orchestra, band and chorus. The Chorus and Advanced Band won first place at regional competitions and Advanced Orchestra took second during the 2006–2007 school year. Advanced Orchestra took third place and Advanced Band took second place during the 2009-2010 year.During the 2010-2011 year, Advanced Orchestra took first place and Advanced Band took first place overall in their category. In 2013, the guitar ensemble received a Superior rating in their first regional competition. Tilden Drama has also run many successful shows, ranging from Beauty and The Beast, to Clue, to Cats.
Moving Back to Original Site
Montgomery County Public Schools officials plan to move Tilden Middle School out of its current facility and into a newly renovated school by 2019. It would be moved back to a modernized Tilden Holding Center on Tilden Lane (where it was originally located before 1991). The Tilden Holding Center was used as a holding facility for middle schools undergoing renovation. A feasibility study is scheduled which will determine the scope and cost of the Tilden modernization. The county no longer has a holding facility that can accommodate a high school. The current site of Tilden would fit that bill once the Tilden students return to their original building.[4]
