Kaunda stood as a candidate for the office of President of Zambia in the 2001 general election. In 2006, he served as chairman of the short-lived United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which floated Hakainde Hichilema as a coalition candidate for president. Kaunda and the UNIP backed MMD candidate Rupiah Banda for the presidency in the 2008 presidential by-election.
